State of The Wine Industry Report & Infographic

Rob McMillan, EVP & Founder of the Silicon Valley Bank Wine Division held an online event on April 17th, 2012 to go over the state of the wine industry with Paul Mabray of VinTank and Tony Correia of The Correia Company. It was a very informative webinar and you can find some highlights, a related infographic and the report below.

Some highlights of the report:

  • Inventories – trending to short (but not severe yet)
  • Grape prices continue to trend higher. Land values are rising in tandem.
  • Imports will increase in terms of percentage of U.S. sales
  • 75% of wineries expect 2012 to be good to great
  • Baby Boomers are the largest wine consumers
  • Social media interest and usage increases with size of winery (smaller wineries tend to be more negative)
  • The “5th column” represents a disparate set of companies with online solutions to sell and market wine. It faces significant challenges to adoption now, but the strong digital tide will eventually push companies to increasingly go online.
  • Expectations of bottle price rises, especially at the higher price points
  • Overall growth of 7-11% expected
